Here's to a student already so that they can use that. So usually we not just produce good quality images. Also we like to do calculations. So becausw quantitative justification is very important to support our design solution. So we calculate the Lux level luminous lots of things inside. We display our idea, use this right the images. False color image, and so it's actually no. That is quite common things. So these are lighting design for visual performance based on our eyes mechanism. We know that we learn that from the undergraduates book of your teachers, so they said that they always say that in our human beings eyes way include two selves. The first cells is coin cells is give us the colorful vision like RGB. Basically the things is red, green and blue. Also the teacher tell you so. We got the road cell as well, that is deliverd dark, that Gray vision, no colors. So the main things is two types of cells. So we call that in May image formation lighting design. But recently the things changed. So I'm not sure have you heard or not, maybe not because it's a new things happened for lighting and not just for lighting designer. Also for lighting industry is a new era as a new page is coming from a neuro scientist professor in Oxford University. His name is Russell Foster. We know that we got Norman Foster is very great architecture designer but Russell Foster. Is a neuro scientist. Study the Bring our brains so he discovered a new cells in our eyes this cell's name is quite long. Is a photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. You see it's a very complicated, but this cells not like the common cells deliver vision. These cells deliver non visual effect. This non visual effects so. According the terms said that to influence our seconding system influence our scanning rhythm, so straightforward we use simple words that we sleep. We wake so this cycles we call that 24 sleep wake cycles so be controlled by themselves. So this cells influenced by outside the light so that knew at page has been exposed. That means we should design the lighting to support to achieve human health and well being. So we call that human centric lighting design so the short name is HCL. This give us knew task new mission to do we have to consider design the lighting to improve alertness. These alertness things is usually happened in the morning, so we wake up. We come to office, we do something we like to keep proper level alertness also cross the day we like keep a good mood so that links with lighting so also toward the evening. So we like keep the good sleeping quality that's also controlled by these third sense cells in our eyes, also linked with our bodies linked with our brain as well. So. That means so when we consider lighting design, we shouldn't just do calculation and put the lighting there, so we have to look outside to check the Sky to check the nature. So in the morning so the sound is there so the Sky color is a bit warmer, but approaching known tend to cold and afternoon later afternoon come back, come to warm again. So that's why. Like this picture, this bottom picture shows we should design light so use the dynamic away that to support suspending system so that help us to achieve human health and well being. So it's a new idea but it's very, very important has been proved by neuro scientist. So it's a key issue. No, I think not. Just me. You know that recently I feel awaited depressed. I think similar like you guys. So not just this kovit knighting. I think so have you notice recently we got horrible weather. Yeah, I'm quite sensitive to this. Maybe I'm studying this field. That's why sensitive to the weather. So we always recently, I think for me I feel depressed. But in summer we got it COVID-19 but. Was not so bad, but just recently the weather we look outside. We know that it's no light, no proper level light, especially for sunlight. That's why we got problems that straightforward that's linked with our spending system and light. So for my research, so I like to focus on in this area. So during the last five years I started to check. So how this lighting issues impact on our body, especially for the sending system. So the first study done by me recently is the focus on the day lighting, glazing color and human performance. So I worked with my research partner in team, why University? We build a lab? Testing room like this single office, so we checked the day lighting issues and colorful grading system impact on human performance so we know that. So recently lots of people try to use energy efficient facade system or grading system. They, like you know, industry like put coating across the clear glazing but they didn't notice after they put coating there. So they change the glazings color, so we get blue, we get runs, we get some green bat color. Also some people produce some think this quiet, clever idea. They call that smart glazing. So that means so change color according the surface. So how much solar radiation received in summer? Too much soul against received that change. And that's color tend to dark blue or dark red. So people think according energy efficiency. These are really great idea. I might agree, but from my point of view that could cause problems. Be cause they forgot human performance and linked with the sending system. So I checked this so I don't testing in Beijing over 2 years from 2016 to 2017 we applied a new metric system linked with day lighting. We call that sick ending stimulus. These metric system produced by a researcher. From a North American, so a University researcher is female. Professor is really great in this. In this field she produced these metrics. So we apply this metrics to test this room. With different colorful glazing system, how much scanning stimulus the potential received these are figures. So also we test the human performance according the first things is alertness. So according different time from morning. So from age to afternoon so approaching the finish the day's work. So roughly it's 4:00 PM. So every day so we test people. So second part, we also according this way to test people's mood. So we apply the medical level are really great tools named panels. So we try to test people's positive mode. Also test peoples negative mode we check. And other things way not just tested the mood. Also alertness. We like to test the brain functions so that links with the combination links working performance. We applied tools. This also medical level things we call that reaction time testing tools. So the famous tools one of them is a good goal. So we test the response time. So we produce we found lots of interesting. Findings the first one is we found people still like the best grading system is a neutral things is clear glazing, no colors. So also people like these glazing system with a higher transmittance. The higher transparency is better, so coding visual performance. So the second part is if we could increase the transparency so that we could increase peoples moved toward the positive way. So also we like to reduce the color saturation apart from the glazing system. So according this as accounting stimulus we found so if the proper level has been achieved like this CSS level, we use a benchmark is 0.3. So if we can achieve that even we change little bit the color is a doesn't matter is not significantly influence human performance. So people stop complaining. So even is a colorful glazing so. The last interesting fundings we cannot explain at this moment, we ask people, but nobody can explain that we gonna carry on do researches if we apply a neutral that color or the color came to blueish. So we found people work. Performance has been changed toward the positive way that's reflected by a short reaction time. That means looks like a blue, so blue lights also get good thing because we criticize we said that people know like the blueish or reddish. We like neutral, but sometimes we if we give people blueish lights yo the blue glazing system could improve the working performance that we cannot explain but. Result. So follow that way we carry on the studies. So this idea originally come from me because during the first study we do measurement we found in winter. I know most people realize in China, in winter, in northern China, in capital city Beijing. So they suffer lot about heavy air pollution. These pictures is typical pictures in Beijing Time Square you see heavy air pollution. And just like the air pollution, no pollution is big difference like we because we are lighting designer. I focus not just for lighting. Also focusing on view. If people look outside even the lighting level is the proper is achieved. Proper level is high level but its air pollution. What happened? What's going on? So I give my friend suggestions. We carry onto measurement. We try to. Use a normal standard grading system like this 5. To to check also apply a medical level. We call that VS the skills so include for vision part. Also nonviral part number apart that's linked with your mood with your well being your personal well being or also relaxations etc. Lots of things. We produce some very interesting fundings. The first funding is with a clear glazing clear windows. These air pollution is happened even the light pollution situation so that we can find a very significant negative effect on people's performance. So people so little bit air pollution outside people will complain inside at all. You know they feel depressed but also not so comfort rible, so they also they think they're alertness level is not higher. But if we change into another color bronze this glazing. Very interesting is only happened for the heavy air pollution situation, so people start to complaining. But if we apply the blue glazing, the most interesting part is this part, so only so with the heavy air pollution peoples complaining that rate has been reduced with the blue looks like a blue glazing can. I shouldn't send that Kang. May might mitigate the negative effect, so that response from the Aqua from the people staying inside. So sometimes we you know we cannot explain why about we observation is like this. So it's very interesting we think so. Follow that way just happened last last spring so. We got another research question is if we can we know that day lighting is very good. We prefer to get more delighting if that the high daylighting level always deliver so good performance. Always reduce complaining. Is that true? So we try to carry on do research. So here is we done the experiment testing in a real office space. So it's a you can check the pictures is open plan office. So in this office we define the six seating positions that receive different day lighting levels at a different time. So we use these devices. This just push at the table so the sensors height at the ice level. So we also use a wireless control this. Devices to get the measurement. The data include Lux level also include the color spectrum of the light, so at the same time we check the peoples response according this lighting conditions. So we found so in this. Please stay late. There is a well late. That's office space, so the seconding lighting is very good. You can see most of time we can achieve this scanning stimulus above 0.3 is a very high level. Looks like good day lighting condition from a view from non visual so health well being part people will not complaining but the result is. Might be a little bit different, so the 1st result. So even though a proper day lighting condition has been achieved, if we increase this lighting level, definitely we can improve the mood. So that means reduce negative mode. So so in improve our mode toward the positive direction. But so, on the other hand, the alertness level has been reduced as well. So that's quite you know, interesting result, so mode being changed improved, but alertness level being reduced that toward a negative way. So I'm other things is for Vietnam visual. This effect that means is the improvement improve alertness if the lighting level. So at the eyes that height so receive about 500 Lux, that will not be changed anymore according this non visual that means achieve proper level and if even you increase that level, so that's no any big change can be found. So the third part is quiet interesting, so even we get achieve the proper day lighting conditions already. So people still like to use artificial lighting. There is a bigger reason they want to achieve the proper visual comfort because we use site window, the day lighting come from site. You know it's quite easy to bring their problem for them based on these findings we carry on research. We say if we don't your side window in the room. So it's a windowless room. We try to still provide with the day lighting wayo some. Advanced Day lighting system. Like this. We use this fibro optic day lighting system to deliver light day lighting from outside to inside. So what's going on? So we yeah, we apply this soundtracking combined with the fiber optic system to check this sending performance. So we in this windowless room we applied three different levels lighting. The first days are very lower level SO150 Lux crossed the window services so we know that according standards is quite lower, but three. The middle things is a 300 level. That is OK, it's just normal. The 500 Lux crossed the table that higher that's higher, so we check that. So yo this fiber optic day lighting system we found for these middle level medium level. And high level, so it's quite possible to achieve high level that's extending lighting, so the potential is very higher is no big problem for this. So that's why we think so. We could so apply this Karen. Apply these fibro optic day lighting system. Even we know that is so expensive is not easy to use that. So we got a lot of problems. But this cat a lot of good aspect advantages according this way becausw this system can deliver high level. They suspending lighting can give higher potential too. And trend our scanning system is quite healthy, is healthy lighting system. Compare sorry. Compare with artificial lighting. We know that we can also increase you apply the artificial lighting to deliver this. Seconding this health lighting lighting effect. But compare with this artificial lighting. These a day lighting system more efficient. That's quite clear. So that could be possible to apply this system. So in the future, for the window lasts that room so we can solve the problem is that you know people feel depressed even they have these artificial lighting. So we still carry on do research. Recently my research partner try to build we have built this room already testing room. We carry on this idea. This idea is try to test you know skylight. So we try to test the skylight and at the same time to test artificial light. We know that skylight and artificial ceiling lights both come from a top. So we test. What the difference is between people? Because we have no windows. We just shut the windows. People cannot see the view so that views effect is so not so clear. So we test. So what's going on for user day lighting or use artificial lighting according the human beings performance? So they said first, apart, according these lights and health. The second part is a video, so we know that, so not just the lighting influence our psychological performance. Also video the visual performances visual content is very important, so I just finished a project is try to apply this Chinese vernacular window. So in the modern office building try to check what's going on for people. Performance this way, focus on the biophilic factor and visual performance. Visual preference. Sorry Bud. In this project we studied 18 different windows. This windows is the variables for this. Windows is different shape but the window area is the same. So this window type is a very typical vernacular Chinese traditional window. So in China we call that. In Chinese we call the huacheng. So translated directly we call that flower window. You see some parties. It looks like you know choir. Has a like a flower things so in the way we apply this window we use two different view. One view is urban view. Just building is boring urban view. It's you know no interest. People hit that. So another view is a natural view. So with the park with the rural with Countryside view so we test in the psychological lab we test people's response. So the key funding is. So the Viro preference for this window shape is positively related to this buyer flick factor. This ubaya Finnegan factors include perceived shape, complex city, so also second part is a biomorph morphic form. So if this Windows looks like a flower, definitely receive high level preference. Also, the third part is very important is a fascination. This fascination is normal. The meaning, like away sync. These psychological measures is come from a very famous theory named attention recovery. Thierry, produced by two environment psychologist, so Rachel couple and also Steve Kaplan. So these guys we apply these measures to test people. So we found this visual preference for this window received no direct effects. From the external environment. So he's quite interesting is it doesn't matter outside is, you know, is a citizen or outside is countryside. So we found this very interesting. These could expose knew idea so that when we do retrofit or regenerate a historic area for the border zooms like board with modern city or historic area, if we you know for this window age of this view issue if we applied proper vernacular. Windows, could you know, could not bring some bad aspect. Know people always say that you know more than buildings can destroy the historic value culture value, but according this preference, way could be another things, but I shouldn't, you know, define this as a final result we still carry on. Do research in this area. So I'm not the research is we check the lattice windows is typical Chinese Chinese when macular types. So like this window also lots of lots of types over 100, so this project should be completed during the last summer. But do too as we know that the COVID-19 issue we stopped but recently we just come back to carry on this research do survey. So try to use psychological way to check people's feeling. So according this Chinese traditional lattice window, so what's going on? Recently I got support from the undergraduate research scheme and worked with two year two students. Gonna check the. City nightscape, so how about people's response? So if they because we found, especially in China, people like this quite shining, colorful the nightscape. But that is linked with heavy light pollution, so I want to use a psychologist jacoway to test people if they are preference. Higher level. This view linked with a higher risk of light pollution, so this is a project still ongoing. I we finish the some we call that is images we call that visual stimulus. We produce lots of large cases already, but at this moment the student is. Still produced the online survey, so after this read it I will send the link to you and I wish college can participate in this research. I gotta compare. So in England in Britain. So peoples feeling also in China or in East Asian city. So what's the difference is OK? So. Accordingly, says seconding lighting things. I think it's very important, so I just want to show 2 cases. Recently I have the students last summer, so 5. Yes, three students participant computation named Relax design competition. So focus on lighting things on the window day lighting system so I they ask me for advice. I help them to produce idea the left side is, you know we try to apply this idea in the modern high rise building. So during the COVID-19 so it's possible to apply different colorful glazing. Recall that dynamic, colorful glazed facade system. To medicate peoples you know negative feelings. So unfortunately I think they didn't get any word. But I think it's a good idea, could we? In the future, maybe next year, so when the computation opened so students maybe another student interested in this idea. So the right side is also happened is 2 two years students, so ask me for help so I have them produce. Idea is scanning lighting happened in healthcare hospital wards. How to apply different color to energized people? Patience the feeling to improve their mood. So this I think this field is quite interesting. Yeah so this is my presentation. Thanks a lot for your attentions thanks. Thank you very much, John Tao. Great so. I'd like to open up the remaining part of the session for discussion, and you can. Either put your hand up or type a message into the chat or. Give me away or something like that and Janet, how can you? Can stop sharing and then we can see only Gallery view. Great, OK, we've got a question from Ronald Ronald. Would like to come live and. Voice your question yourself. Yep, can you. Can you hear me OK? Yes, thanks for the great talk. I was just saying I completely agree with the being depressed and grey, miserable winter being stuck indoors. But on the relationship between. Sort of. Productivity and mental health and lighting quality. That's something that really annoys me that I just wanted another opinion on you know how in new buildings you'll often design them with light sensing systems so that it's always 500 Lux. And if the Sky gets brighter outside the lights down, the blinds come down so you can never really tell the time or the weather or the season. I was wondering if you thought that also has an impact on circadian rhythms. And then I'm I was just going to ask you about the blue light question and that increasing performance but affecting people's mood is that related to? Russell Foster so. It makes the link with the release of cortisol, you know, as a sort of stressor in the brain. The things the first things I said that you know we like clear windows you know clear gling system with blind that's not bad but we have to apply that user clever way. For example I do even before I studied this non visual studies. So I always support the overhang becausw according visual performance we like to get view from outside. The blind we we have no choice because too high level the day lighting in we get glare problem but we have to like with this non visual effect we might need play the game in the more clever with try to Ward the glare problem and also get view. I think that's a balance. So for the blue things I think that you know when I do this measurement testing the result is blue not. She improved the mode, blue just improves the working performance but mode and working performance is two different things. Yeah I want to. Yeah I clarify this yeah yeah, so that the five the 500 Lux thing is not. Do you have any evidence that keeping the light level constant also has an impact on people's mood? So not just the color but they cause we study these things is if we keep the stable lighting level that we could apply artificial lighting. But these are challenge for this study because. I pretty sure our study according this way is the first in the world. We applied a lighting. So in China you know we got. I think all the people heard the phone. She becausw accounting functions Thierry. We follow the nature before this sick ending. Things happened. Our Chinese ancestor told us we should follow natural way so we outside what happened. So inside the same. Yeah, you know that that's why daylight in the dynamic lighting conditions is very important, is healthy, you know, have been proved by this neuro scientist people already. Yeah, thank you. OK, thanks. Thank you Arnold debate. Have you got a question? Consider blue hand. Yes, very interesting talk by John how I was just wondering looking at it from my thermal analysis perspective, I may be able to draw some analogy between the situation of the blue light journalist helps with the productivity and people are more alert, but they're less comfortable or less Moody. But that is could be explained quite easily because. Examined the library's two too much of a comfortable temperature range and we find that students that they would know. Sorry, what's the word? I'm looking for productivity levels and how much they work and how, how alert they are in an exam. Performance also drops because there are two completely, so maybe that's not a surprise at all. You know, maybe the blue light stimulates the alertness inside all of us. The case. Yeah, the the thing says. Quite interesting things. We have to balance the blue light like you said that is stimulated people productivity. But you know, according vereb mode or something people complaining. Yeah, we complain because we're getting ready to fight and flight. That's why I even not just for lighting, for the environmental performance like thermal things, I said that we might apply the dynamic way, not fixed. You know, not just use one number so that you design this accordingly. We have to change always change. You know why in the first things happened for lighting we liking. People produce human centric lighting. That means individually people design lighting for individual people. You know that not should. Average that that way. I think this summer comfort should I? I don't think it's far people started realize this in Nova. Yeah, that could be a new trend. Interesting topic here. Thank you. Yeah we we can work together. Thank you. And maybe you've turned your baby. Would you like to ask a question? Hey gentle, sorry I must admit that I just skipped into the presentation becausw finish one of the tutorial, but I yeah so I I was half through your last bit of the presentation but it just kind of inspired me. Yeah, so we're talking about different factors, possibly. Will well put the influence of the Depression, for example. And so how you think about environmental psychology. And do you put well the majority of the factors into the consideration for the design or the retrofit or the adoption of the building an? Can you put your methods for the lighting psychology analysis in into, for example, the space analysis? Is it possible to do so or can you do the combination of that? You know? Lighting design is quite interesting. Lighting design is could be the most closed area with a special design like architecture design, becausw lighting design not just include the light, so physical things also include the psychologic things. Is people's view, so we use eyes, not just just get to the light. Also will get color, regret ship we get space. That's why you some the psychological the we call that tools or measures. That's a different question layout. Different device is very similar to the people used to do special feelings or architecture. You know, like how beautiful this building, how proper comfort rible this room. So it's actually they are same. Right, yeah, so it actually brings more opportunity yet to look at. More full story of the way. Yeah, so not only lighting, but definitely not is very important. Also the space or the other issues. Yeah, this is quite similar. Actually, I should say that it's the same. Yeah, OK, OK. To see so we use eyes to tell the light and color, right? OK thank you OK, thanks. Thanks anime. Have you got any other questions? Anybody? I was just thinking Wells. People are thinking of putting their questions together about the undergraduate research scheme and whether you consider advertising that project through our Twitter feed 'cause that might harness a large number of respondents for the project. Yeah, so I try to. My project is try to reuse online way at this morning. We planned to try to put the survey. We still checking now it's because we got the images. How to you know? Use online way to produce a proper like I use some psychological lab. Is a very quiet room and put the image there and put some people stand by and record their response. But I still consider it challenges how to you know, put online and you know people focus on this not be bothered by other things you know that could be hard, yeah? OK OK, thanks questions. Ask another one if I can. I. Mutual acquaintance Steve Photius and Sheffield. Spent a lot of time trying to persuade everyone to change St lamps too. Blue, Ellie D's I wondered if I wondered if what your reflection on that would be from the perspective of the study you're doing about the color of the cityscape, and that's influence on people. Yeah, you know there is a non visual issues been discovered. That's gonna bring troubles. I should call that troubles too. Steve Hotels study becausw. The non visual things. At evening we should avoid non visual world blue. Yeah, but Steve is hotels. The research is focused on the visual performance. They only care about energy efficiency. You know that. But to you know, it said you know nothing perfect is we have to balance at this moment is white or blue LED everywhere? One of my research I just discussed this issue with my Chinese research partner. So we need to check people psychologically. Check. So if people like warm or light at evening or blue. Because of the loop supporters that white Aleydis supporters only care about energy. But you know, we have to care about people's health also. It's not just you know the body is attending's health also psychologiques you know well being mental health. Thanks, thanks. Any other questions? Or comments? And maybe just I'm just curious about where the experimental lab you mentioned. Well, just for the future and research purpose, for example, is it going to be easy to open to students or staff within the University? Now my library is now in Chinqua. Yeah it's because Maya and you know in in our school is very hard to fill the lab space. Yeah, now it's they. They found some rooms and I give them idea and you know how to build a library. Just do testing. We have to work with others. Right, I might miss the point is. Do you encourage more like Windows? Open the openings for the new design or is it going to be a balance? And they have to be a balance. Like David, Things is the uniform energy people or thermal people. You know. Maybe bigger window could bring lots of problem, but for lighting people you know is opposite way. I always encourage my students to open large window to get more natural. You know, not just natural light. Also natural view in. So, but like I said that nothing perfect, we have to balance. Yeah yeah, I agree. In terms of the structure or even like the insulation, maybe the improvement of the technology for the the window that the glazing isolation could help with that. So some improvement. Yeah, but you know, in this studies we found so for the glazing things according energy efficient glazing they have to put lots of coding. So the coding's bring new troubles. That's why my research originally come from there. So the coding change the color of the glazing. So you have to balance transmittance. The visual light transmitted from there also coding things. So that's maybe develop in the future, so it's quite good. Great ideas to develop the neutral coding didn't change the light color. That's perfect I think. Not sure. I'm just guessing there would be another way. For example, adding the layers of glazing. I know some just to avoid the noise so they have for example put two glazing rather than single one. Would that help with the energy efficiency and also have no problem with the coating? That that's a thing that is happening like a double plans 3 pounds. You know? You know that's it, but for from like I said that from lighting people health, well being within. We think we like single points. I also you know clear glazing. No color, no coding's you know the simple the better. That's it, that's it. Yeah, that's very hard. That's why research always developed toward your future becausw, nothing perfect. Now we have. We need to balance a lot of things in so yeah. Thank you, thanks. OK, thank you everybody for your questions, lest anyone wants to ask anymore, please put your hand up or let me know just a couple of notices. Next week, on the 18th of November, Ronald will be speaking and launching his latest book, The Week after that, on the 25th of November, Han May will be talking on her research into the circular economy in the built environment, and then we'll finish the session on the 2nd of December with the stereo cycle thesis is. My presentation and that will be the end of this semester's talk. So we're looking to put together a list for next year 2021 list. So any ideas or suggestions or guests you'd like us to invite or bring in or shift in the format, or any ideas you might have? What would be useful to improve your research, share ideas, build networks, win grants, collaborate outputs, impact, etc. Please let me know. Be very interested to hear that. Before we all head off, can we go down to the little reactions button at the bottom gives yongtao thumbs up or a clap. And our usual tradition. OK, thanks a lot. Thanks thanks, I'm really appreciate this and hopefully see you all next week for Reynolds talk. Cheers everybody. See you later take care. Thanks, bye.
