Thanks for joining us today. My name is Jamie and this is Gavin. Hello and we working CST computing Services Department. What we're going to do today is just talk you through some of the basic services and systems that we have available to get you started. The hardest thing when you join the University is. So much information being thrown at you in One Direction and we thought we just kind of break it down for you. Take you through some of the basic web pages that we have available and just show you the basics of what you need to know to really get the most out of your IT services here at the University. During your first academic year. The University Liverpool has a raft of information on their websites and it's no different for the services. Here at CSD we have our own intranet page built within the University Liverpool site. With so much information available to you online. To navigate to the site, you simply would go to liverpool.ac.uk/CSD and that would bring you to the landing page. You can see here. You'll notice that it's split into our services and a variety of other quick links, etc. But you also interesting data set of services, so if you can't find exactly what you want on the main home page, if you give that a click, it will list pretty much every service that you need to find. Today we're going to concern ourselves with the quick start for students. This is the best place to start as a student when during the universal of bull and IT fundamentals is for stuff. If you are a postgraduate student using a mix of both of these services may be useful to you, but today we're going to concentrate primarily on the quick start. For students, I'm going to give that a click. The quick start page for students is primarily aimed at new students, but just because you're a returning student, it doesn't mean that the information on this website isn't it useful to you either, and we're going to do today. We're going to talk through each of these pages and just give you a brief introduction to the information on it and where you can find out more, or what you can. Actually, you can do so. First of all, thanks Jamie. What we'll do is we'll activate your computing account. First of all, will click the link. The very top one activate your account just to the left of the quick start web page. OK, so as soon as your placement has been confirmed at the University, you can activate your computer account right away before you arrive on campus. And you can do that by clicking on activate, so I'll do that now. OK, so you'll need to enter some credentials on here at your surname and your student ID. Your data birth and just confirm that you're not a robot. Just to point out at this moment, if you do have any issues with the visual verification or need any Accessibility support, and please get in contact with University by either email and service desk@live.ac.uk or you can telephone is on 01517944567. Once you've done this Gov, the user will then be given what's called an MWS account. Is that correct? That's correct, yes, in most most of the time, some of the students get confused between their student number and they University computing account. The student numbers sorta geared towards Liverpool life where you're you're computing username and password is usually for anything to do with IT services. Would you say I? Are you in agreement with me that your end WS account, your computing account with exception to choosing your modules? An senior grades at the end of the academic year? You will generally use your MW's computing account for pretty much everything else. Everything else, yes, also generates that decorates their email accounts that your email address but does generate their email accounts so it will be their computing username at liverpool.ac.uk. The students can also use them. At students dot Liverpool was welcoming, which means that they have access to all the additional. Benefits of having a student account. It evidenced for things outside with universities, which is like uni days and different using like Amazon for prime for students, etc. That's how you'd confirm that with your student email address, yeah? So I'm just going to take us back up. So once the students have activated that accounts, do I always think the hardest part that they have to do is choosing the password? And I always say if they can choose a password and they're not going to struggle getting a degree at the University because I think it's it's. It's just as complex and just as hard as choosing Google password. Now there is plenty advice on choosing your password, but there's a bunch of rules that you have to adhere to, such as not using any standard words in the dictionary, etc. It sometimes it does take a bit of time to find. Password that is suitable and there you go. There's the categories they can. Password must be 8 characters long, including number include both upper and lower case letters. It's not too complicated, but you might find your initial your standard password that you would use for the things may not be accepted. Just bear that in mind. That's right, Jamie. While we're on this page, I probably just encourage students to feast their eyes over the information security as well. While there on this page. And even though it's not categorized in the Quickstart Wilder on the password section, it's always good to just have a little look at the information security, computer security, email security, and so forth is to just have a little look at that and get familiar with. Just be aware, yeah, exactly. I think you're especially right at the moment. In the situation we're currently in, where a lot of our work and teaching and courses are going to be delivered in. In a mixed method. Yeah, situation scenario alot of the work. And will be done from home etc. It's even more valuable than ever to keep your IT self secure and just being even more hyper aware about where your credentials are being answered and just a good tip for anything to do with the University is just always make sure in the web browser the Web page says.liverpool.ac.uk just before you put your University credentials anywhere. That's just a great little tip for you. So once you've got your University Liverpool accounts, the next thing you'll probably want to do is access your emails. You may have already received a couple of emails from your modules. Once you've registered, etc, and as soon as you open your inbox, those emails where it might be waiting for you. So on the quick start panel, which go to your email account, and as you can see, as we mentioned before, there are various types of style that your email address might be displayed in. It tends to be your name at student.liverpool.ac.uk. And once you got it, the email address that you are able to access your inbox and there are a few ways you can do this under Gov. Yeah, I'd like to mention that any computers that you log into on campus using your computer username and password. This will already establish your credentials with outlook. So as soon as you open outlook 2000 2019 it will show your inbox. Haven't said that if you're away from campus. You can also also set up here your email using Office 365. You can download that for free and we'll come to that section A little bit later on. You can also use webmail.live.ac.uk as well, so if you've got an Internet browser you can access your email straight away and Jamies just pointed out there is just clicked on web Mail and there we go, you put your computing username and password it. And log in and this will display your inbox. So there are various ways of accessing your email as well, and you can also connect your email to your mobile devices, which I think we get to a little bit later on as well. Jamie, that's correct. That's next, I believe. So so far you have registered for your computer account and now you have your email address. The next thing you probably want to do is you want to get connected to the University Liverpool and what we mean by that thing switches Wi-Fi and actually starting to utilize some of the services and systems we have available at the University. So we're going to do is put in, navigate back to the web page and I've already clicked on the get connected web page. Here you go. Once you've navigated to get connected page you will see lots of information about. Wi-Fi, for instance on the right hand side there connect to Wi-Fi for free and you'll see it says connect to eduroam Wi-Fi. Eduroam is a Wi-Fi service that is provided externally to the University by a company called Azure, which can be accessed on multiple campuses around the world. So many universities, airports and hospitals etc or utilize eduroam technology and it is basically a bit like a BT open zone or. Equivalence, and however it does, require your University Liverpool credentials to sign in and utilize. It just means that when you could various locations, you will have Wi-Fi access at that location. If they're using eduroam, and to collect, you connect to eduroam depending on what device you're on is ever so slightly different. However, you're generally going to just be entering again your University computing accounts details, so your username and your password that you have set up. We do have on this page a link just a little bit further down it says connect your device to our Wi-Fi. There are. Multiple different types of devices these days. Mobile phones, iPods at tops, and they all connect slightly differently, so we can't go through each one one by one or will be here quite awhile, but you can simply use that web page that will point you to in the right direction whether you're using Android device, an Apple device that's right, Jamie can I just mention that if anyone does struggle at this point, they can? All they can always use the self-service in CSD. To log a call with CST and they'll always be someone there to to help them out with the the connection problems and stuff like that. That is also one thing to point out is the eduroam guest net. It's not that one you want, you want the edge your own to connect to Wi-Fi. That's a really good point. So when you are on universal campus pretty much everywhere on campus, when you try to connect to Wi-Fi, it will list several different connection points and one is called eduroam guest net and that is for guests coming onto campus. Karen and they would have to register for access. However, you do not want that. One's Gov is just clearly said, you just want the standard edge room and you will be generally prompted to enter your end up US username and password on your phone will obviously remember the credentials, so once you've done it once, you will continually connect to eduroam each time you come on to the Universal Campus University. Liverpool appreciates that your students also will need some me Time Whilst you're in the horse residents and that's why the University is happy for you too. Connect your games consoles to our University, but only fire a wide network within your room. There's a subheading there called stay safe online. This is actually the University providing free antivirus software to students, and if they just go to antivirus.liverpool.ac.uk, they can get the free version of Sophos again just by entering their computing username and password. They can download the software for free. A lot of students are probably conscious about subscribing to something like Norton, which is going to cost them a fee a yearly fee, but we provide sauce for free, so please utilize that at the same time I think this is a good time to point out as you kind of alluded to a little bit earlier on and that as a student you're entitled to download and install software for free, and that's a whole raft of software at the University. The most obvious one is Office 365. With Sham and enables you to install. I think up to five. Is it 5 devices covered including the latest version of Office. So if you want to see which software you're able to download as a student at the University, if you just go to CSD forward slash software, you will see there isn't a whole web page dedicated to the various software that you have access to, and this pretty much two or three different varieties of software for almost every task. So if you're working with statistics, does a complete array of software if you working with graphics as an array of software. If you're working with qualitative or quantitative research, we have software very specialist, very subject. Specific software is also available. But on the right hand side there you'll see that Microsoft stuff software for staff and students or staff and students are able to install Microsoft Office on up to five devices for the entire duration of their time at the University of Liverpool. To do this, all you have to do is click on get Microsoft Office for free and this will direct you away to a further web page which is our Microsoft Office page and if you click the link this will direct you to a webpage portal.office.com, but as you can see I'm already signed in at this point, but if I wanted to I could click the install office and I would allow me to install the office 3. 5 apps on my machine. When you get to this page sometimes if you're not already logged in, you'll be prompted to log in and it looks like a Microsoft Office pages you see were away from the University Liverpool network at the moment we're on office.com, however I am still logged in with my University details box J at liverpool.ac.uk, and all she would do is you would enter your username at liverpool.ac.uk and this will automatically find the rest of your credentials and log you in. I can also mention that you can take advantage of the Office 365 applications as well. One of the one of the main ones for basic storage in personal storage in the University is your one drive. You get up to one terabyte's worth space free from the University. I had. I always tell people to try and utilize this now. So once one terabyte of space is A is a lot of storage at the University and at the moment while still working, you might. You maybe. Sometimes off campus a bit more than you would have been if COVID-19 coronavirus hasn't happened. 1 drivers. Great way to access your files from anywhere in the world. Next, we're going to talk about staying safe online fast at the University, Liverpool. Yeah, that's a good point Jamie. Just to mention that it's always good practice now to have a code passcode on your device. Always have like 6 alphanumeric pin you know, don't just have the four simple characters like 1234 trying utilize the technology with new devices, biometrics, your finger, you face recognition. Always set up them 'cause it adds that extra security to devices. Yeah, we do recommend two factor authentication as much as possible, don't me. But the University Liverpool has been working hard and investing hard in the IT security and infrastructure over the last few years. All of our services are behind very secure firewalls and the network is extremely well protected. Having said that, Jamie, it's just want what worth mentioning is emails. University will never ever send an email request and in personal information. And so it's like it's like what the bank the banks do. They never ever request personal information. So if you get a spam email just to mention that the University does sorta clear out any spam email so it get it goes through the firewall, rigorous security system. So most junk emails, spam emails are filtered out as and when they come through the Firewall. If you want to know more about staying safe online, then on this web page there are things to our security page. It acceptable use policy and a link on the right hand side to find out more about staying safe wherever possible within your with your IT services account at the University. Next on quick start we are going to look at academic registration. Academic registration is primarily focused around a tool that's called Liverpool life. Liverpool life is a web page. You may or may not already be familiar with, but to log into Liverpool life you actually don't use your University computing accounts. You would use your student ID number and the pin that you have set up. If you forgot your pin, you can click the forgot pin link and it will help you reset that. Sometimes it may take quite a long time for the reset pin link to come through because it's a very very busy system at the very start of the year. So just be patient with that. Please don't keep clicking the forgot pin because it will just keep putting into the back of the back of the queue. Often that loophole life is something you may or may not have already used, but is often where the start of your universal journey begins. Once you've got your account and you log in, and once you've got your student ID, this is where you can start to pick your modules and confirm your arrival as a student at the University. It's also where I believe you get your. Your student loan approved and confirmed in your maintenance grants and class student loan confirmation letters and stuff like that. It's also very important that you wear your individual life to make sure you will blow the photograph and this is what goes on to your student card. Once you've completed everything, you need to complete on the poor life. You will then be asked to confirm your arrival, your attendance as a student at the universal pool. Again, this will release your funds, etc. This will also generate a procedure with the student systems to print your student card. This is usually collected from your Department, but during lock down I'm not too sure exactly what the procedure will be at this point from an IT perspective, but I'm sure that information will be. To to you closer to the time is it also worth mentioning at this point, Jamie that it's worth checking the. Where the student addresses same time address and also personal address and all in previous years. Sometimes these have been mixed up. That's a great point. So when you're entering your information, when you confirming your details and you need to. Enter or double check that your home address is correct and you will be asked to enter. If you're not staying at home, your term time address and please make sure that this is correct. You can do. You can do a basic post code search etc to enter your address, but if you have any issues with finding or locating your your post code, your tent, I'm address then please contact student live life at liverpool.ac.uk and they will help you with this. I also believe that. There's a student administration web page that you can navigate to and the phone number 7946759 where the staff there who work in student services will be able to help you with any queries you have with entering your details. Now, if you have any trouble navigating around Liverpool life, there is a short video and the link to that video is actually on the Liverpool life landing page. The video tour of the poor life and this will basically just give you a short demonstration of how to navigate around the system, but it's very, very straightforward. Next, we're just going to look at some of the top tools. Now. We've mentioned some of these services already to you, and so Garth mentioned just before the one drive Microsoft one drive where you have one terabyte of storage, and this is part of your Office 365 suite which all staff and students at the University you can download and up to five devices you can access these files anywhere, any device, at anytime. However, there are many other top tools at the University have available to you, one that's actually not listed here. We're going to mention very quickly is zoom. the University has a site wide zoom license and zoom can be used by yourself to actually host meetings as well as attend meetings. Many of the lectures that you're going to attend over this next academic year will be hosted on tools such as soon, and it may be worth you navigating to the zoom website to install the zoom application on whichever device you choose to attend. Those lectures etc. Just like to point out with you mentioning zoo, we also provide Office 365 teams which is another collaborative working platform where you can do conference videos, set up meetings. Yes it is. It's another location that students may be pointed too. So I should say a lecture, lecture and module might be set up as a team and within that you can have. Additional channels and those channels might be about specific subjects or for specific groups for breakout work, and it allows you to collaboratively share files and folders together and just also have general conversation. It's a great place and great space to work collaboratively together to regal point guiding thought of Microsoft Teams to mention at this point, but Microsoft Teams is again it's part of our Office 365 package. That architect stuff will be utilizing students. Also have access to their very own Internet page. This is the student Internet and can be accessed. Iastudent.liverpool.ac.uk, and when you do that, it takes to your login page. When you put your credentials in. Your University account credentials it. We're lucky win and you log into the student page and this is a great space for students. You'll see straight away this announcements that are students specific. There is news again that is student specific. It's a good place for you to be able to access all the tools and that you need by the quick links on this left hand side here, so you'll see. Obviously canvases at the top. This is our latest virtual learning environments. We're currently migrating from 1 old service to the new one. There's also little full life QikLink, the CST Service desk I was going to mention there Jamie, the most important one is the second one down, which is the CSD service desk that our baby. If it can be forgotten about, you just need to know the CSC service desk. That's the most important thing. But also here there is a link to web Mail. There's a link to vital which is the Valley that canvas is replacing. You can also see things like the link to the library and this is takes you to library page which will help you to take books out, etc. Because although the campus is on lockdown, you will still have access and provisions to all of the materials that you need during your studies. You also see a print balance. This is managed by CSD. You can top up your print balance if you need to print. And finally, if you need to get help with any of your issues while you're studying at the Universal Pool, please don't be scared to reach out. There are a number of different ways to log a call with CSD, and we have a self help portal on the CSD website that you can log into and this will raise a ticket and it will be directed to the appropriate team. You can also email CSD service test by just service desk. At Liverpool.ac.uk you can go to the self service portal. If Jamie just clicks on the self service portal service portlet. So you can you can log a ticket with the self service portal. At CST, and this will raise a ticket and it will be directed to the appropriate team. To deal with your query alot of the basic questions that you will have, we actually have what's called a knowledge base and a lot of the answers to the knowledge base will be could be found here and all you have to do is give it a click. I'm trying to open it in a new tab. I want it loads up. Or do you have to do is just search for keywords and it will bring up all the articles that are associated to that specific subject. So for instance we were mentioning zoom before. If I just search for zoom. You'll see that there are a whole array of articles on various. Questions about zoom. So how do I log into zoom? What's the presume apartment PM meeting participant guide? How do I schedule a zoom meeting? And you can just continue to search until you find the answer. Now if you don't find the answer, I think God was going to suggest I was just actually going to say if the answer is not there, what, what? What will the students have to do? So if a student looks for something in the knowledge base that is not answering the question or there's a question they bought, it actually failed to fix the issue. What would you do then? So at that point, that's where you would ask for help or advice from CSD directly and ask. I've said before. There are several ways of doing this. You can raise your own ticket, you can phone us on our 517944567. You can email service desk at liverpool.ac.uk with the quickest and easiest ways are definitely here so you have to click the support button and raise your own support call. Or you can click here to start a chat message and this will put you in contact directly with an IT staff member within CSD. And they will work to see if they can find a solution again. If they can't, they will take you to second line support where you'll be passed onto a specific team who are specialists in that subject. So if we click the support button. You basically then just have to fill out a little form an detailing your phone number so we can get ahold of you. A short description of what your issue is. A slightly larger description if you need more space, more details, and the if it's about concerning a specific PC, computer, etc. We would just like to know the asset tag if it is applicable and that is a number that can be located on the bottom of any of our devices. If you need a technical visit, don't worry too much at the moment about filling in the building and space reference details. If you have any attachments, such as screenshots, that could help. Stuff to to find a resolution quickly please just attach as much information as you can hear. You can attach anything from word, documents, pictures, etc. And then you just simply click submit, join anything to work for the government. No, no, but that's perfect. Yeah, absolutely fine. If you are on campus, you aren't able to just walk in at the moment of our service desk appointments. Do you have to be made and appointments can only be made when we feel the issues conflict resolved by remote login so we can't log into your machine and fix the issues. It's only if it's probably hardware related. Acquire you to bring the device to us. However, if you do want to speak to us about this and about coming into visitors for a variety of reasons, then Please don't hesitate to get in contact again. As I say, we can be contacted via email. We can be contacted via phone on 01517944567. You can also keep up with the latest CSD information. If you add at Liverpool CSD to Twitter, we often put regular posts out there. You can also ask questions on Twitter and hopefully someone will get back to you if it's more of an issue, you'll probably be encouraged to razor call with the service desk so the appropriate team member can deal with the issue. It's also it is a great location to get that first bit of information. If you are worried the service isn't working in your thinking, it might just be you. If it is a site wide issue or it is a known problem, we generally tend to announce these things on Twitter first because it's a very quick and easy way to get in contact with a large amount of students. So if emails for instance were down and we weren't able to send you an email, we would basically put it on things like Twitter.
