About this video
Our UK constitutional expert, Dr Mike Gordon explains what happened at the Supreme Court today, and how it may affect the triggering of Article 50 by the UK government.
Dr Gordon says the court draws two key conclusions. The first relates to the neccessity to turn to Parliament before enacting Article 50, and the second concerns the devolved administrations; namely Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (from around 1.15 minutes).
From around 2.55 minutes in, Dr Gordon considers what may be the next step in the process, including the likelihood that government will introduce “a short bill to trigger Article 50” which would be “sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the case”.
